The name originates from the Middle Ages when masters gave their servants gifts in boxes on boxing day. The servants did the same to their families, and these boxes were called Christmas Boxes.
Besides, on Christmas Day, churches in Britain have been collecting money for the poor in boxes, which were opened on Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is much of a family holiday, when friends and family who didn't spend Christmas Day with each other come together and eat some leftovers from Christmas, baked ham, mince pies with brandy butter and some Christmas cake.
