A bank holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom UK when most people are given an extra day off work to coincide with banks, government offices and most businesses being closed. Introduced by Liberal MP John Lubbock who first tabled the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 with its aim was to ease pressure on workers by giving them an extra four days off.
Schools are also shut on bank holidays and many other services are scaled back including transport, local medical and council services.
Bank Holidays also presents consumers with a great opportunity for long weekend getaways via cheap flights and other great shopping deals both online and in-store with specific bank holiday offers and promotions.
