C. Encounters are ways God deals with the sin among his people (one of the many ways) Dont bail yourself out of the experience when the Holy Spirit confronts you during an encounter. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink. For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. It was about the sixth hour [noon]. The first step towards recognition of a need for salvation is for a person to acknowledge that she is a sinner. God accepts the Samaritan womanGod accepts you and meonly because of this man at the well. And it has to do with why this woman was out at the well at this time of the day. So come to the water, you who have no money come buy and drink (Isaiah 55:13). But Jesus went through Samaria because there was someone He had to see there. Not for permission to get a drink, but for a drink from her bucket. This is what I mean by being graciously relational. Jesus just stated the facts, but He teaches us something important here. Encounters arent Seasonal or Geological. But you may not have till next week. But I want to base this particular sermon on the Samaritan Womans encounter with Jesus. But this woman didnt go out to the well at that time, when the other women would be there. Now Jesus abruptly seemed to change the subject. You see, it was not unusual for a woman to come out to the well to draw water. 42They said to the woman, We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.(AM). Now, as chapter 4 begins, we are told that Jesus left Judea in the South and headed for Galilee in the North and that he went through Samaria. He answers: Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. And the woman knows it. She knew it, and Jesus knew it. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock. Is Jesus greater than Jacob? Others have gone to help those who lost everything in Katrina and other disasters. I see wonderful examples of this in Christians who cross these barriers to reach out to immigrants and homeless people all over our city. The Cross And Separation From The World (1 Peter 4:1-6), 7. It recalls the lodestar verses of John 1:14, 16: The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Now she sidetracked him into a religious discussion. And well find it out at the side of a well, where a Jewish man has come and meets The Samaritan Woman at the Well.. We all need friends who know who we really are and love us anyway. But his hour was not yet come. The fact that encounters can get very uncomfortable sometimes because they convict us of our own sinfulness and our need for a savior. Why did that prompt Jesus to leave? This living water Jesus gives, he gives free of charge. (N) 20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.(P), 21Woman, Jesus replied, believe me, a time is coming(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. This water becomes a spring a well of water (verse 14: The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water). Here is Don Carsons description of the situation: After the Assyrians captured Samaria [the capital of the Northern kingdom of Israel] in 72221 BC, they deported all the Israelites of substance and settled the land with foreigners, who intermarried with the surviving Israelites and adhered to some form of their ancient religion (2 Kings 1718). Do we believe or reject him when He says He unconditionally loves us and will meet our every need? For the solution to her problem was sitting right there at the well, in front of her. It was just another ordinary and busy day in which she carried out her routine household duties. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Whether you have one, two, or three strikes against you, Jesus wants to talk to you today, just like he talked to the Samaritan woman at the well. There is a lesson for us here. Racial and religious obstacles, moral and social obstaclesthese were the barriers that stood in the way. The reason Jesus left Judea, John says, is because he knew that the Pharisees knew something. And my sons and daughters are superior they never die.. And the only vessel available was hers. Night/High Noon. It makes it easy for us to forget that Samaritans and Jews did not get along well in the time of Jesus. So he is not leaving Judea because he is afraid of the Pharisees. Like you didnt belong? The only man that would stay with her was one who would not marry her. It is a well-known story, and its found in the Holy Gospel for today, from John chapter 4. B. 4. Now the Samaritans were a mixed-up bunchliterally. But it was unusual for a woman to come out there at that hour. He used terms that had deep spiritual significance. And from his fullness we we proud, angry, critical, lustful, greedy, worldly, lazy, fearful, unrelational have all received, grace upon grace.. Insider/Outsider. Sitting here by the well, Jesus was tired and thirsty at about the sixth hour. to refer to God. But we must gather them in. Jesus himself would remove her guilt from her. But no one asked, What do you want? or Why are you talking with her?. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria The Samaritan woman does not disagree with Jesus, but she knows that it is going to take a miraculous work of God to make it so. Her answer shows that they were on different wave lengths. He fills the universe and is everywhere present. And people have to trust us before they will trust the Savior we say we believe in. There on the cross, Jesus will say, I thirst. He, the sinless Son of God, the only wholly innocent manJesus would endure the physical agony of the crucifixion, plus the burden of bearing the punishment that we sinners all deserve. How about you? Here Jesus identifies living water with the Holy Spirit who indwells each person the moment that we put our faith in Christ. Well, she did not know a lot, but this was one thing she did know. Not that he approved of their sin. The first type is individual transformation. In her joy and excitement, she went out and told others. Do we believe or reject him when He says that suffering is a major instrument used by God to build into us the character of Jesus Christ? 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. We must show that we are interested in them, accepting them without demanding that they change first. God is never doing just one thing in what he does with us. Thats why you never get thirsty again not because one drink is enough, but because one true drink produces a well for an eternity of drinks. He revealed His identity to this immoral Samaritan woman, not to the religious leaders or even to His own disciples. While he wasthere he heard an audible voice, which said: You have come to the wrong place. He realized this is indeed the Lord Jesus speaking to him. John 4 gives the account of Jesus encounter with the immoral Samaritan woman at Jacobs well. The Jews looked down on the half-breed, semi-pagan Samaritans and would not associate with them. But it wasnt so. And it was considered inappropriate for a good pious rabbi to have a one-on-one conversation with a woman in public. The disciples were as literal in their understanding as the woman was. Maybe you dont have all your ducks in a row yet. They were hot and weary, which likewise tells us that this was in the middle of the day. They were a mixture of Israelite and heathen elements. The story of the nameless Samaritan woman at the well, recorded only in the Gospel of John, is a revealing one, full of many truths and powerful lessons for us today. The story of the woman at the well follows on the heels of the account of Jesus interaction with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and prominent member of the Jewish Sanhedrin ( John 3:121 ).
